More about this scene

Otterton's brook seems to be dry in this photograph, as it sometimes is during long dry summers. Just beyond the two Edwardian ladies is the King's Arms inn, named in honour of George III and rebuilt in 1889. One Victorian landlord, Edwin Snow, rests in the nearby churchyard with his baby daughter - both died within a few months of each other. The King's Arms now serves as the post office and village store as well as a public house.

A Selection of Memories from Otterton

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Otterton

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Amongst my grandmother's collection of photographs and newspaper clippings, I have a very similar postcard but with much stronger light coming through the windows. Mine was produced by A.J. Way, 65 Mill Street, Ottery St. Mary.
