Happiest Time?
A Memory of Redditch.
The happiest moment of my life at that time 1959 and no doubt of those who knew me was the day I left Redditch, never to return. Naturally I had some memorable times, Redditch Drama Club, Redditch Drama Club, Redditch Drama Club but overall it was a miserable place. And that was before it became a New Town. When many said it was the 'good old days.' They didn't live on Abbeydale Estate. They didn't work at The Maudslay Motor Company. They didn't have an old man who came home from the war minus a leg. They'd didn't have a local boozer called The British Legion their old man's stopping off point on his way home from a days polishing needles. They didn't fail the 11+ and find their lives blighted. They didn't go to St Stephen's School. They didn't see a teacher huddled in a corner threatened by three big vicious pupils. If I hadn't moved I would never have discovered things about myself that led me into positions of authority and privilege and accompanying lifestyle. Yes money does matter. Fortunately I found that out but I had to leave Redditch first.
