More about this scene
Every evening at 9pm, four blasts are sounded on a horn at the market cross. In days gone by, anyone whose house was robbed after the sounding of the horn could claim compensation off the Wakeman, if it could be proved that he had been negligent in his duties. The locals paid 2d annually towards the upkeep of the watch.
