More about this scene
Abundant, fast-flowing streams made Stroud an important mill town in the Middle Ages, when water wheels turned the stones that ground the corn. By the 16th century the town was closely connected with the cloth trade, and became famous for the scarlet woollen fabric from which the uniforms of British soldiers were made.
