The first stone bridge over the Wharfe was constructed in 1233; the bridge we see today was widened in 1826 to cope with the increase in livestock traffic to the town market. The bridge carried the great North Road until Ernest Marples opened a much- needed bypass in 1962. In the year of the photograph a telegraph pole was placed near the bridge; it now carries the town motto, 'Imperium in Imperio' ('a government within another'), an allusion to the county council governing the Rural
