Whitby, The Quay 1927

More about this scene
The crowd look on as the catch is being landed for the market. An expectant bevy of seagulls watch carefully in case there are any fishy morsels coming in their direction. Years ago, the quay would have been bustling with women gutting the herring and packing them into barrels with salt and ice. Today, the local fleet is a tiny one in comparison with the fleet of 100 years ago, the fish they catch, like the herring of yore, may well be transported far away before it is eaten.
