Whitton Was A Lovely Place To Live Between 1969 1885

A Memory of Whitton.

I lived above Mr Gilbert's the Wet fish Shop in December 1969, when my daughter was born in February 1970 I used to buy lots of bits from the Donkey Shop, also there was a lovely Baby Shop, Clark's Shoe Shop, Toy Shop & a Cycle Shop. On the bridge was a lovely Wool Shop. We also had Woolworths, then it turned into a Tesco we had Barrats Shoes and Jonquil Bakery was where you got beautiful bread and cakes.
The Ark Pet Shop was in Nelson Road, it then turned into an Estate Agents, I think.
Whitton was a lovely place to live. Strathen Avenue was where Shirley Valentine was filmed, the first part where her and new husband brought a house.

My Uncle Roy and Auntie Jenny used to own the Donkey Shop, and I worked in both Jonquils as a teenager in 1980ish
My Mum still lives next door to your old house in Percy Road. :-)
Hi there. I grew up in Park Road, Hounslow 1968-1996, but Whitton High Street and Murray Park were my hang outs. The Cycle shop located opposite the Co-op was called Weavers. Lovely lady ran it. The toy and model shop on Whitton Road opposite the church was called Hodgsons. They dealt mainly in plastic models kits, airplanes, Scalextric and RC cars etc. The confectionary shop next door was run by Don; my Dad always said he was popping down to ‘Dons’ To our the papers and get his Players No6!!! But my favourite place was The Donkey Shop (not sure why it was called that) was my main go to place to spend my pocket money each Saturday morning on a Matchbox Car, always had them displayed inside the left entrance window. The old post office had an offset entrance and it went into the place on the right. Parquet flooring and the counter was along the back wall. Always smelled so good in there. Good times.
