More about this scene
Local dry stone walling, brick and Swithland slate are all here in abundance, as the road drops down from Maplewell Hall to the village centre. Quarrymen and their families must have occupied a high proportion of the cottages, working to fulfil the 18th- and 19th-century demand for slate both as a roofing material, and for graveyard headstones, of which many are works of art. Ultimately the quarries were overwhelmed by the cheaper Welsh slate.
