More about this scene

Now further down Bridge Street, Frith's photographer was looking south uphill past the Newcastle Street crossroads. Beyond the mainly Victorian buildings in the foreground are some good Georgian ones further uphill, such as the stone-built Lion Hotel on the far right. The road is now partly pedestrianised, and leads to the Market Place and the 1851 Town Hall, which was originally built as the corn exchange.

I would like to ask if anyone remembers the shop Winifred in the Morris Buildings on Watson road. As i was chatting to my mother and she could remember an aunt that had the shop in the 50s - 60s. i am hoping someone may have a photo or some more information i could surprise her with. thank you
Was student from 1943-1950. Canon Molony was the headmaster. Wartime. Poor food, dark at night and cold! But we survived. Michel Clark (535).
You can see the name Collards painted vertically on the side of a shop. This was my great-grandparents' haberdashery. The name can still be clearly seen there today.
