For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Carole and Roger Banham moved into 35 Darcy way with our son Steven it was a great place to live our first home . WE lived in Blackwood Place not sure what date we moved there I think it was about 1965 just after my sister Samantha was born. It was a new house .My sister Sam and I went to the school in the village and I think it had not long been open. I am doing a project to assist my daughter of 7 what I was doing when I was seven... Does anyone remember The Lawns a row of old houses ,now gone .on the Bath Road Hounslow. near the bell and the car park, High street end. The bus stops there now ,in the car park.
Seen every day but nearly always missed, was the sign above the hairdressers, the one with the shade down and owned by E. Curtis, it was still possible to see the sign at the top, just below the guttering, that said it was the site where the public could go and have a bath.
I attended Bridgend Technical College from 1961 to 1966 studying electrical installation. I was an apprentice for English Electric Company which had a branch office at St David's House, Wood Street, Cardiff. I worked on high voltage installations ( transformers, drive mills, switchgear). I worked at Aberthaw Power Station, The Steel Company of Wales in Port Talbot, Pyle Substation, just to name a few. ...see more

I have read with interest the comment from ex inmates of the Castle School, Stanhope. I was there from 1943 until 1950. As with some of the others I was first placed in similar establishments ; Rochdale – where the main spare time activity was working in the quarry, literally, with pick and shovel, then transiting via Aycliffe. Does anyone remember me ,born February 1949 . I had two brothers Peter and Raymond . I went to Whitgreave infant and junior school , then Old Falling senior school 1960 to 1964 .
As children we stayed at North Side Head in Middlesmoor .. the farmer was called Tom Whitfield, his wife was Mirriam. We stayed in the cottage next door to the farm. As children we fed orphan lambs and collected eggs and had a wonderful freedom ... Happy days

I am Paul Percy Robinson who always felt I did not belong in a town and perused with interest the origins of my family it took years, but eventually found a wee place called the broom house just up the bank at Eglingham and traced my gt grandfather to that spot his father also called William Robinson was a farmer of 174 acre farm living at the broomhouse ,it took my breath away ! to see the beautie of the cheviot's ...see more

I recall this photo being taken.  I am looking into a shop window of Hollington's.  I am wearing a cream coloured coat and clutching my handbag!  Happy memories of Old Redditch.
I lived at 29 primrose crescent Harold Hill attended Hilldean infants school going on to Harrowfields school for girls. I remember the shops at Hilldean ave, and sextons corner shop on straight road. Nurse sexton delivered my sister in 1953. The 174 bus took you to Romford shopping and the market. The 66 bus took you to gidea park and the train station. My name is Sue Carfrae and I worked in the Sports Shop during the seventies. My mum and dad, Ted and Joan Carfrae worked in the Model Shop. The owners of Wally Kilminster were Mr.Mrs Lees who retired to Ferring in Sussex. They were wonderful shops and we had happy years working there and living above. My family (Brown) have lived in Handforth till 1995, over 300 years! I (Susan) used to live at 47 Wallingford Road in one of the prefabs, with the air raid shelter in the garden!! Happy memories of Blackburn attended St Johns School 1930s lived in Garnett Street no longer there I was married at St Johns Church 1952 and lived on Queens Rd till 1975 when we moved to Sale Cheshire. My Father was a clock and watch maker and had a shop on Park Rd bottom of Audley it had a big clock over the door. Does anyone remember the thatched Ramsey Cottages in Halbutt Street? I'm not sure that that was their official name but Sir Alf Ramsey lived there - hense my name for them. They were demolished to build a small housing estate of modern boxes - vandals!
It is a winter evening, and Saturday. I am in Ealing Broadway and for a change I think I will get a train home to Hanwell. Not every train stops at Hanwell but I board one. West Ealing, we slow and stop, pretty soon we are on our way and pass under Jacobs Ladder at West Ealing. The brakes go on and we arrive at Hanwell. A few people get off and disappear into the night. I lived in Lambert Road Brixton Hill with my sister Pat and two brothers Ron and John Wootton. My name being Rene Wootton. I was in the cubs and also in the choir at St. John's, was a member of the church from early 1940's until moving in 1952. Great time, remember the war time dances in the St. John's Hall on a Saturday evening, being taken there with my parents. Doing the Lambeth Walk. Ah memories. John Rooke
oh remember that business bottom of Leigham Court Road. used to look in whilst waiting for the bus 137 home, both Belltrees Grove and Valleyfield road. as we moved to Belltrees... quite a few actors/actresses lived in Streatham as we had the Theatre there as well.. we had a lot in the town, it was great.. didnt need to go up to London unless it was special shows up here!!! Even remember having plays in the Rookery!
The old town hall was burned down in 1919 during the Peace Day Riots, one of the great oxymorons of our time!
I remember the police box outside of Elthorne Park. Sometimes the light on the roof would flash and a policeman would answer it.
Hello does anyone know of the comrades club in cross bridge street Waltham cross Bill Jamieson was the secretary of this club,he and his wife Mabs lived opposite the club I understand Bills portrate hangs over the bar along with his banjo. My gt. Grandad was a steam engine driver of the Army stationed in Tidworth. He lived on the corner of Pennings Rd and Coronation Rd . His house was the large house on the left of the junction. I lived at The Gables 22 park road cheam in 1950 to 1955 went to Ambleside school oppisite the red lion pub, the Fair came once a year to our road great fun with the galloping horses and playing All I want is Music
My father bought our chalet, last one on the left on the road out. My brother and I, 12 and 10 at the time, spent most of our school holidays there, often alone. When I think of the primus stove, pump water and no toilet, I am horrified now, but we had wonderful times over many years. It seemed the sun always used to shine! Please can someone help? We run #bromleyhour every Thursday 8-9pm on Twitter, do you have any idea what the name of the fantastic coffee shop was? I'm thinking the Importers but I can't be sure. The smell of coffee to this day reminds me of walking past and sometimes if my Mum had enough money, we'd go in for a treat. Who else remembers?
I have no memories of Derrington unless they are deeply rooted epigenetically. My great grandmother is named Derrington and I write to learn if the town, or some other source, has records of emigrants.
My name is david james crwford (bunny) I was brought up on shakespear cres and went to lewis st school in 1945 then later to winton secondary modern . Any one remember ma lewis at lewis st . Me and brian hurt did we got the slipper a few times for larking about in the playground and being reported by her and sent upstairs to the headmaster. Does anybody remember the name of the greengrocers in the centre of Sale Moor,I worked there for a short time .They supplied you with one of those bikes which had a basket on the front which didn't turn and on the first day loaded up my fruit and veg only to fall off it right outside the shop!I think I lasted about a week
In the 1960's we as a family always holidayed in a caravan at Happisburgh. At that time there were lows on the beach which were lovely for the children to paddle and play in. They were warm most of the time and shallow in parts so they were quite safe. After the groins were put in place the lows disappeared and it was such a shame. The beach was never the same. When the ice-cream man came around my mum used to say I could hear him leaving the shop in Acton. Tony Bros sold the best ice-cream ever. They used to sell lovely spearmint lolly's and I became quiet addicted to them. Never seen them on sale anywhere since. There's an opening for somebody reading out there I think.
I lived at 64 Brook Road have wonderful memories of the youth club, Skipper Williams was in charge. I had an apprentership with RJ Whitakers as a carpenter joiner left the UK in 1969 now live in Western Australia
I was born in Sydney road Hornsey in 1946 and went to North Harringey junior school the headmaster was Mr.Patterson and remember all my teachers Mrs.Marsh,Mr.Lancaster,Mr.Howe and the amazing Miss.Nottingham who managed to get the whole class to grammar school and there were 45 to a class in those days! I lived opposite Streetly Riding School, at 23, Manor Road from 1955 until 1969. I spent most of my spare time at the Riding School, I kept my horse at home but used the indoor school, took rides out and have been ever indebted to Colonel Leech for his help and support for all those years. My husband was enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at Lakenheath RAFB from 1975 - 1978. One of the requirements for permission to bring his family over to England was proof of a place to live. My husband rented #3 London Lane (now known as The Hannah House) in Mundford. I used to go to The Court School Of Dancing in 1961, 1962 ,1963. This was above Burton's in the market square at the centre of Enfield. It used to be open 7days a week. The evening started with a lesson,and then practise of all the ballroom dances for the rest of the evening. I have just found this site and how strange to see a post from Neville Gerry's son. I used to play with Neville as we were the same age! I lived at Flax Court which was the home of my grandparents, Bernard and Catherine Whitaker. Bernard was the manager of Tilmanstone Colliery from 1930 to when he retired in 1960. I have fond memories of Eyethorne, sitting on the shed roof watching the combines. Playing in the haystacks, etc. I hope Neville's son reads this as quite a surpries to see his name.
I remember me and Shirley ramshaw getting drunk at our house in hedworth lane in our dinner hour from school, also riding brandy Shirley's pony who taught me how to fall of correctly, and getting my first pony Katie and our allotments, sunny days in hayfield, and hanging out up Davidson and Fenwick street, having first snog in bus stop.! My family moved to Ferrers Avenue in the late 50's and I still remember most of the people who lived there. In the days before both sides were cluttered up with parked cars we would play rounders using 4 trees as posts, all the children and a some of their parents would take part. i remember being sent to the gas works for what they called gas shiners. they were 2 shillings a bag no matter what size the bag was . my granny used to sew two bags together so as to get more and i had to push them home in a pram that i could hardly see over the top of all the way to newtongreen . |
i remember my pal at school always wanted a mouse but never had any money . one day he came to me and said the man had gave him one for nothing and would i keep it in my hut . well the first time i went to feed it it came out the box , ran up my arm, jumped on to the ground and was never seen again . it was a wild one that the guy had caught in the shop |
This was one of my Dad's favourite pubs, along with the Leigh Arms in Sale Moor. I used to go to the Warwick for the Saturday matinee and meet my Dad after. We lived in Kershaw Ave, Sale Moor and I went to Norris Rd School. I have very many happy days from Sale Moor and Sale.
All my school years were spent at st barts on tatton st 1949 to easter 1959 I think my most memorable time was when we went to the isle of man for a weak whith harry holmes who was head master at the time

Many years ago, I promised to buy Dad a drink in the "Labour In Vain" public house in Oldswinford, a hostelry that the family has talked about for generations. I had driven past it once before in the 1980s but at that time it was being refurbished and was not open. Our ancestors had left Oldswinford in the 1890s to settle in the South Wales valleys. Going into LMT hospital,every summer during school holidays to have operations on my,right hand which was webbed... Mixed memories of painful,operations - but kind staff and reading every Enid Blyton ever written I think...all provided for the children's use by the hospital... I envied the patients who were allowed to sleep on the balcony...int hose days parents were only allowed to visit on Sundays...so those fists were treasured and much looked forward to
I worked at the DD in 76 just before I went off to the Army . I was a assistant to the Owners Son, who Had recently passed away leaving my school friend in charge of the Biggest Club in Great Britain , I cant remember his real name as its been so Long but his nick name was "Spot" which he Hated ! I was born in the house number 9 Hart Road . I remember attending Manor county First school and walking g there on my own. Who'd do that now as a 5 yr old ? Brother and sisters all went to St Mary's and I remember seeing them on The playing fields through the fence at the bottom of our garden . Our neighbours Were the Wellhams just up the road . I grew in Riddlesdown from the end of 1959 (when I was 3) until 1976, my parents leaving in 1980. As kids, we had so much freedom, especially as group of 4 or 5, with me, aged 9, as the boss. I remember my new red tricycle being stolen on Riddlesdown (the Downs, as we called it), when going to the ice cream hut for a few mins. The grass had been too long to push the trike any further. I,ve lived in Irby in my early years in a prefab, temp housing after the war. I had a accident and went to Heswall hospital by milk float as we had no car or phone in those days. My memory was the open or charity days I think with a plane in the open grounds and we used to play on it, health and safety would be all over it nowadays. I used to live in Oakland Road off of the High Street. I also used to go to Uplands Road infants and Junior School. Saturdays were spent at Saturday Morning Pictures at the ABC cinema. I also remember Hides department store. After school, we used to stop off at the fish and chip shop and ask for bits left over from the chips, which were free and also the bakers for yesterdays cakes, which were a penny! ...see more

I have fond memories of Shoalstone Pool. Both my sister and I learnt to swim in this pool. i can remember a swimming gala, about the time of the photo, we had to walk around the pool and up and over the diving board, which i was frightened to do as I didn't like heights !!!! Can also remember in the winter at high tides watching the sea wash over into the pool. So glad to hear recently that this freshwater pool is to be saved.

I was born in Great Bardfield on the 31st August 1939, and I have fond memories of my life in the village. Such as forbidden playtime in the old mill at that time. With Richie Morris my cousin ( who still lives in the village). Even swimming at the watermill hiding from Mrs Smith. Does anyone remember an old school building that used to be roughly where the library is now? I remember going in there with my school friend but I don't know what school it was.
Does anyone remember going to this school? It was next to St. Peter's Church in Westfield. I remember two of the teachers names were Miss Coles and Mrs Brimble I believe. There was a building across the road that we went to sometimes - near where the Norwest Bowling green now is. In the summer time we used to go and play on the grass surrounding the church. My mum used to come and collect me as I only lived a few minutes walk away.
I have distant memories of my dad going to this place to measure men for lounge suits , I seem to remember him getting upset because of the poor people (as he said ) having such a difficult life . was it at this hall ?
