Cawdells Arcade

A Memory of Watford.

We moved to Watford when I was 8 and I remember our regular trip from St Johns Road to the market behind Cawdells where we bought our dog Jally. There were so many stalls selling good quality goods, I still have the china teaset my mother bought - "Blue Chelsea". I spent my formative years in Watford and was dragged kicking and screaming away when I was 16.

Hey Sue! Thanks for sharing your Cawdells memories. Seeing the picture took me right back to being 4-7 years old again.
It would have been nice if you'd mentioned the years (roughly) when you were making your "regular trip." My memories are of the late 60's when my mum used to take me shopping with her in my school hold. Some of the High St shops I remember from then are MacFisheries, Caters, Ketts, Clements, Sainsburys & Woolworths.

When I was young a favorite was riding on the escalator in Boots
when it was on the corner of High Street/Queens Road unfortunately it was only an up escalator you had to walk down the stairs
Yes Cawdells on the corner to the right as we entered into the market...I was often taken there as a young child to see Father Christmas and ride on the train that took me to him, ( of course the train never went anywhere, just jolted from side to side which gave the illusion to a young child it was on the move )...The same as seeing Father Christmas in Clements, both departments stores i very much looked forwards to seeing him in as a very young child...
