More about this scene
A fascinating picture of a suburban street. On the extreme left is Palmers, with John Bull tyres and cycle lamp batteries on display in the window. A few doors up is the distinctive facade of a small cinema, or 'flea pit' as they were sometimes known. Until comparatively recently every town had at least one cinema, and cities the size of Southampton often had scores of them. On the right is another relic of the old high street - the National Provincial Bank.
