Nostalgic memories of Worcester's local history

Share your own memories of Worcester and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

These were good years amongst good people, although my memories of the school itself are rather mixed. I'm sure there are those out there who could add to my reminiscences. Some of the teachers at the time were 'Taffy' Elkins,? Stezaker, Fred Bushell, Les Cole, Geoff Billingham, 'Jock' Anderson and Sam Bottomley who used to bring his cello and recordings of Kathleen Ferrier to keep us amused - and ...see more
How many of you remember this shop at the Cathedral end of the High Street? I can recall how in the mid 50s, some of us from the Tech, at the Victoria Institute, would go there hot-foot at the end of school, to hear the latest Eddie Cochrane, Buddy Holly or Elvis. I remember how we would listen to any-or all - of the top ten on vinyl in one of the listening booths...and then leave, usually without buying any of them!
Happy memories of watching cricket at New Road in the 1950s, the most well-watered pitch in the country! It was often under water for three winter months each year, when the Severn chose to flood. My dad was friendly with Sid Styler, the groundsman at the time. Dad arranged for Sid to get me a cricket bat signed by the visiting Aussie team that year, as a 10th birthday present.Seem to remember names such as ...see more
Seem to remember having my short back and sides here when I was a nipper in late 40s, early 50s. Had to go down a flight of stairs to the basement, below the tobacconists on the ground floor. Always wondered why the men were asked 'anything for the weekend sir?' and I wasn't! I would have loved a lollipop!
Went there between 1953-56, prior to going to the Tech. As far as I recall, teachers there included Bourne( Head), Jenkins (Deputy), Court, Morgan, Davies,Hooper,Mclean, Jones,Houghton. I seem to remember that Mr Morgan collapsed and died during a staff v boys soccer match. I have a photo somewhere of Eric Hooper's class of 53. Proud to say that I could name 40 out of the 42! All good guys to a man!
My Grandad Dick Skan owned the shop next to the bank. It was a tobacconist / sweet shop and you can just see the sign on the left hand side of the photo. I have memories of sitting on a high wooden stool eating toffees when visiting my grandparents, probably in the late 1960s /1970s.
I was born at an address on Bromwich Road (home birth 1955) and shortly after my family moved to Old Malvern Road in Powick..I attended Powick School.. then Christopher Whitehead Girl's School. At the age of 13 we moved back to Bromyard Rd ..St John's. My Brother and his Wife still run Brunswick Arms in St John's. Love these memories of Worcester. Glenda (nee Hankins). Had many happy memories during the times I worked at Bennett's Dairies Office. :)
I went to this school back in the 60 had a great time there loved school any one remember any of the teachers there.
I started there in 1949, William (Billy) Bourne was Headmaster, a large portly man. Some of the other teachers names I remember were, Hooper, Griffiths, Stone, Houghton, Gibbs. Mr Gibbs took us for gardening & we had to walk up the Malvern Rd to gardens in Pitmaston Park. I left Chrissies in 1951 having passed to go to the Worcester Technical High School.
I'm looking for any photos of the demolition of the chimney at the Pope Iron Works in 1958/59. The contractor was Charles Eden. Also are there any photos of the area known as Blockhouse Street in Worcester around the early 50's and 60's? I would be pleased to see them.
