More about this scene
A party composed mostly of ladies in long flowing skirts enjoys a pleasant stroll between the river and the monastic ruins which adjoin the cathedral. The riverside promenade is said to be built on a foundation of rubble-filled barges sunk in the 19th century. Today, this bleak scene is much more leafy, thanks to extensive tree planting.
