More about this scene
The Esplanade 1899. The Beach House Temperance Hotel (to the right in photograph No 44204) is apparent on the left in this view of the broad Esplanade, looking towards the centre of the town. The straw boaters and caps worn by all the males reflect the prevailing etiquette and fashion of the time. On the extreme right is one of the winches used by local fishermen to haul their boats up the shingle beach above the high water mark, since Deal had no harbour of its own.
