More about this scene

Caption for Eccles, Church Street C1955: The name Eccles comes from 'ecclesia', and means 'the place of the church', so it is no surprise that its central street is called Church Street. Our view is looking up from the Square towards the railway station. The square tower of St Mary's can be seen peeping out at the centre back of the picture. St Mary's is Eccles's parish church; it was mentioned in 1180, and is one of the very first founded in the area. Eccles Cross is on the very right of the picture in front of the District Bank. Though it is old, it is not the original cross, which was knocked over and broken by a lorry on the first night of the black-out. It was put away for safe-keeping and never seen again.

About once a fortnight mum and I use to come into Eccles via the No.9 bus from Worsley. Use to walk down Clarendon Rd. and onto Church Street. In fact my parents lived in a flat above a butchers shop further down. At the bottom was Bradburn's where we use to go in for our Eccles cakes and occasionally a coffee. Late 50's and early 60's.

I was born on a gunsite at the top of chatsworth rd in 1947,does anybody else remember it,ellesmere park was just starting to be built round about then

Hi, my name is Roy Mozley & I was born in 1948 in a prefab in Rydal Avenue, Winton. We then moved to Lambton St, Winton. This was our football pitch then, main problem was this guy who, lets say, used to visit a lady quite often in his bubble car and park it right in the middle of our street / football (...Read full memory)
