Beyond Hounslow, the Great West Road divided into the two coaching routes leading to Bath and Exeter. The long main street of the town gives a feeling that this was a community grown up around a great highway. Most of Hounslow's old coaching inns have now disappeared, or have been altered beyond recognition.

I had my very first ‘Saturday job’ working at BHS in Hounslow High Street in 1956. My wage packet at the end of the day was fourteen shillings and eight pence! We used to stand inside a counter in those days, before everything was open plan and ‘serve yourself’.

Does anyone remember Jacksons pie shop in Bell Rd?
The pies used to melt in the mouth, the girls that worked there were dangerous though, they used to jump on you if you were lucky.
I was born in 1974 and grew up in Rosemary Avenue. I went to Alexandria Infants school until 1980 when I started Hounslow Heath Infants school and then junior school. My teacher at the infants school was Mrs Crump, I think there was a Mrs Manning too. Mr Gair was the headmaster and the Junior school. I was trying to remember Hounslow around 1980. I used to live on Avonwick Road and found this site. I was trying to remember which supermarket was on the High Street. I remember Mr Dixon's delicatessen, there was also a fishmonger near Hounslow East underground station.
