More about this scene

The halfpenny toll on the original Blackfriars Bridge caused riots, and in 1780 angry protesters burned down the toll-house.After a succession of expensive repairs a replacement was suggested, and the present bridge was erected in 1864 at a cost of £265,000.With its colossal piers, and recesses set on pillars of polished Aberdeen granite, Blackfriars Bridge has been censured by critics for being ‘gaudy’.
