Nostalgic memories of Morden's local history

Share your own memories of Morden and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in 1941 my dad bought the house in Lower Morden Lane in 1939,I went to Morden Farm School. Morden was a great place to be as a child I remember starting school and not liking it one bit I only started liking it in the last few years mainly because of the sports which I enjoyed. I went on school trips to Denmark and a year later to Austria to travel to places like that was exciting and we had a surprising amount of ...see more

Does anyone remember a 'Residents Club or Working mans' Club somewhere near to Mossville gardens in Morden which was in existence during the l950s and 1960s. They had a dance every Saturday evening with a live band. A group of about 12 boys ad girls used to sit together in one corner - I remember some of their names - Geoff Harris, David Hilliker, 'Bullet', Sid, Mike and Jill Padden?, Chris and Mary, Margaret - ...see more
Hal's Café, The Caprice, Bernies, were the favoured meeting places for the Motor cycling boys form Morden and the surrounding areas shoving tanners in to the juke box and trying to make a cup of coffee last for about 3 or 4 hours. On balmy evenings we would find ourselves sitting on the bridge on Cannon Hill Common, trying to impress girls such as Christine Simons, Carol Holdsworth, and Sheila McCree, and Janet Law, ...see more
I remember the Caprice very well. I went there regularly in my early teens. As "rockers" we used to leave from the Caprice to go to Mickleham by pass where the boys would speed along the by pass. A group of us would go to the Odeon next door to see films but mostly the motorbikes were the mainstay ofthe group. Happy days, alhough parents must have panicked at the speeds the boys did on their bikes. Lots of lovely memories. Sandra

My name is David Rogers and I was born in Cartmeal Gardens in 1947, where I lived with my parents until 1958 when we moved to Woking. I used to go to the R A C S at Morden with my mum shopping. I lived in Carshalton but as a kid of 11or 12 and accompanied by the `Gang` I / We travelled the length of the Wandle from Croydon to Wandsworth over a couple of years.Ravensbury park rings a bell as we had a fight there with some local lads who said we were not wanted in `their`park. Coming forward to around 2000 Tony Robinson & Time Team dug a 17th / 18th century mill between here & what was Morden Hall Hospital. Does anyone have any memories of that?
I lived in Leamington Ave from 1936 - 1956 with my parents who selected the new house for its long south facing garden which backed onto Hillcross School field. During the war my mother and I were evacuated to Bucklebury in Berkshire where I started school. I then attended Hillcross School (headmaster Mr Barker) and Morden Farm Secondary School (headmaster Mr Roberts known as "Eggy"!!), leaving school in 1952. In ...see more
Does anyone remember a club - I think probably a Residents' Club which was situated somewhere near Mossville Gardens and Hillcross Avenue behind the Morden Tube Station. A group of about 12 of us use to meet there every Saturday and sit in the same corner of the hall where we we used to dance to a live band. The names I remember are Geoff Harris, David Hilliker, Brian Hepburn (known as Bullet), Jill ? Mike Padden ...see more
