Nostalgic memories of Normanton's local history

Share your own memories of Normanton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I remember my Grand-dad taking me to the park in my push chair when I was about 3 years old. I used to sit and watch him play bowls with his friends. We might then go and feed the ducks in the pond before returning home.
I was only a toddler at the time but my Granddad, who I lived with, used to take me to the park when he was going to play bowls with his friends. I used to sit in my pram and take it all in. This was during the war years.

I was born in Clifton street Normanton in 1938 and Smirthwaite park was my "back garden". We played football until we dropped and cricket in the summer and when the ball bounced there was no telling where it would go. Great fun. Long walks up Newland Lane to Goosehill, and Kirkthorpe. I loved Normanton Empire and the Majestic and a bit further afield the Grand across from Haw Hill Park another great place.

I went to Normanton Grammar School 1969 - 76. The Girl's High School had merged with the boy's Grammar School before then and the Girl's High School became the 'Lower School' ie 1st to 3rd years. Later, lived opposite on Church Lane and saw it demolished for housing, approx early 1990's. Sad. Mike Shepherd.
I lived on Beckbridge Estate in the very last prefab the communal hut was at the bottom of our garden. We were the last family to leave the estate when the prefabs were bulldozed. We went to live in Altofts.
