Among documents preserved locally is a letter written by John Blair dated 7 November 1689.
Clarence Street dates probably from the time of the Georgian expansion of the town.
Studs on the road surface mark the only traffic crossing in Kettering at this date.
The original core of the White Lion—to the left of the picture—is thought to date from the 15th century.
The elegant five-bay north and south arcades are witness to this date.

St Leonard's Church was built in 1878 on the site of earlier ones dating back to 1220.

The Red Lion dated back to at least 1792, when it was called Blackwater.
The first-floor bay window just visible beyond is dated 1876 in mosaic, and beside it is the entrance to the North Street Schools.
