Well-mannered town centre buildings open onto the flower-bedecked triangle, but the portents of a more gaudy future are already apparent.
It has twenty houses to its centre range with its pedimented central and bow-fronted end houses, flanked by two further ranges of houses.
Another iron-making village, situated on a tributary of the River Mole, Leigh (pronounced 'Lye') is centred on this demure, triangular village green with its covered pump.
The road in the centre distance is the Coast Road to Redcar.
This is a very interesting view, because the old Red Lion Inn in the centre must have been demolished very soon after this photograph was taken.
Walsworth Road runs from the railway station to the centre of Hitchin.
Bartholomew Street, on the southern side of the town centre, was originally called West Street.
In the centre of the photograph we see the entrance to the railway station, again bringing holidaymakers to the town from different parts of the country.
This rural scene, about a mile east of the city centre along Monks Road, is now much changed.
In the 1930s it was seen as an obstruction to the development of the town centre and was demolished.
The tower of the National School is in the centre, the Bell crossroads are in the distance, and Roomes store will be built to the right of the photographer.
The petrol station on the left with its splendid National Benzole, Esso Extra and Fina petrol pumps is now a Kwik-Fit tyre and exhaust centre.

A site in the centre of town was found for the new church which was built in 1866 incorporating some of the old windows.
The grounds became a park in the Victorian era, and more recently the 18th- century Old Palace has been enlarged to become part of the civic centre.
As at Clovelly, donkeys were much in use here, ferrying herrings and lime from the kiln (centre) up the hill.
It was demolished in the late 1960s, and the site is now occupied by the Ladygate Shopping Centre.
In 1993 this was replaced by the very successful design of the Castle Mall shopping centre, partly built underground below a raised park.
Andover was a municipal borough as long ago as the reign of King John, and later became an established centre for the wool trade.
Originally built in the 17th century as the apple-store for Ambleside Hall, it is now a National Trust Information Centre.
The white building in the centre of the photograph is the Royal Beacon Hotel, and the hotel on the left, level with the flower beds, is the Channel View.
An array of Mr Cattermole's Bathing Machines is in the centre of the picture.
Buckley`s, in the centre here, is still recognisable, although the lettering on the end wall has been removed and the awnings have gone.
