More about this scene
The Cotswold village of Sherborne lies between Northleach and Burford. It is an ancient fording point on Sherborne Brook, a tributary of the River Windrush. Many of the neat stone cottages, like the ones we see here, were lived in by workers on the Sherborne Estate. The church of St Mary Magdelene was rebuilt in 1850, but it has 14th-century origins. Inside is a memorial to John Dutton, lord of the manor, who died in 1656; it reads 'Master of a large fortune and owner of a mind equal to it.'
