Achs In Early 1950s

I well remember the girls in my years. I started at ACHS in September 1951, aged 10 years eight months, having taken my 11-plus when I was barely 10! I recall the Stubbs twins, Ann and Susan, not identical as we could tell them apart quite easily. They lived very near the school. Also Jennifer Springate - with long plaits!! Another girl was Gillian New whom we teased as she had GFN initials on her brown leather school case - so we nicknamed her 'Good For Nothing!'
There were so many friends I had at the school as I spent two years in the second year. Going in to school dinners during 1st year exams a girl knocked me over and I gashed my chin badly on the steps. The nearby Cottage Hospital put stitches in and then I sat a Maths exam that afternoon, probably badly concussed. When I walked indoors my mother nearly fainted at my blue and yellow chin and was cross she was not told and I was left to get home by myself. I came 22nd in class that year and was placed in 2B1. I missed the second half of that first term after having my appendix out in October 1952 but came 2nd in class that year so was placed back in 2A. This meant I had to do all the same work again except for starting Latin. At least now I was back with girls my own age! Wonderful happy days at ACHS. Diana Lawer, nee Maynard
