My last year at the Grammar School, joining the Royal Navy, in January 1955, as an Artificer Apprentice along with three other friends all from 5BF, George Evenden, Dave Alabaster and Neil Hiscock. I still have an occasional look at the School photograph trying to remember all the names. For me it was an enjoyable last year.
Where are they all now!!
I went to Ashford Grammar School and before that Echelford. We used to go to that freezing cold swimming pool!. We had to jump in. I lived in Manor Road opposite the golf course. My sisters and brother and our friends spent many hours playing on the golf course, climbing trees, finding golf balls and selling them to other golfers for 2/6d. Haha - yes me too! Bloody cold! Went there once on bus from Hersham, seemed to take ages and when we got there it was typical British Summer - cold, grey and windy! Shivered and was eventually hoiked out by my mum... then the massive inter-changing bus trip home! It has stayed in my mind though and I can recognise it now. I spent most of my young holidays at Walton Swimming Pool - that is gone too now!
Moved to the Grammar School in 1949 from St.Annes - my brother,Frank Blagrove, was already there. Do you remember the film shows run by Mr Phillips? Entry was one penny. Blyth Spirit with Margaret Rutherford, has been on the television several times recently - that brings back memories. I was born in a tiny house on Clock House Lane (the youngest of nine) and spent many happy hours playing over on "the rec". My brothers played soccer, and we all played tennis, and went putting on the miniature golf course. We also played on the swings a lot.
I attended Clarendon Road from 1950-52 and then moved to Eckelford. Initially my father took me by bike and then went on my own. I am the youngest of nine children, several of whom also went to Clarendon Road.
I grew up in Stanhope Heath...went to junior school and Lord Knyvet's, hen Ashford Grammar. I remember the farrier, the gravel pits, the"Iraqi place". My brother and mother are buried in the cemetery. My friend was Steven Tibbles. I was only a few years old, when we moved into White Lodge, the station house, as shown in the picture, I loved the sound of the trains stopping & starting at the platforms, the house used to shake, it was certainly a novelty, our family consisted of 4 siblings, & mum & Dad, & we lived there for 45 years. I would love to see a photograph of Clarendon Road School, on its original site, before it was replaced by homes. Does anyone have any Internal or external?
I remember visiting this open air pool many times, I also remember how cold it was. Flats now stand where the pool was.
