Bedford, On The Ouse 1897

More about this scene
Bedford grew up at a ford over the River Ouse before the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in the mid to late 5th century AD. It is certainly the river that gives the town its character now. It is probably its greatest asset. Its banks are laid out for parks and walks; they are very popular for walking, and are a-throng on a sunny summer or winter weekend. The river rises on the Northampton-Oxfordshire border and winds east through Bedford on its leisurely way to the Wash near King's Lynn.
