Wessington Ave In The 60s

A Memory of Calne.

Our Grandmother lived at 7 Wessington Avenue and my sister, my cousin and I stayed with her during many school holidays. She was a member of the Blackford family who owned the building works on the left of the photo and Tudor House next door. We loved visiting, sometimes on the Royal Blue Coach. We attended the Church opposite when we were staying and used to play 'church services' with Grandma's hymn book and collect car number plates standing in the front garden. We played in the recreation ground on the slide and roundabout and walked up The Drive to see if the Monument on the Downs was still standing after reports that repairs were required. We loved the walk up to Cherhill to see other members of the family and looked out for the house in Quemerford where the model windmill and tortoise were in the front garden. We walked up the White Path to have lemon curd sandwiches for our picnics and to fly kites. We also walked through Blacklands to try to spot harvest or field mice. For us this whole area remains a home from home.
