Clifton College became the most famous of all Bristol's schools. Founded in 1860 and opened in 1862, Charles Hanson designed the original buildings, including the Great Hall. The school's first headmaster, John Percival, is acknowledged as being responsible for making Clifton one of the leading schools of the day.
