Nostalgic memories of Croydon's local history

Share your own memories of Croydon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I loved to travel to Croydon from Carshalton on the Hill every month with my mother before I started school in 1960. After that it was in the school holidays with my mother and brother. I remember being on a trolley bus and seeing the sparks. Once the conductor came off the rail and a man had to get a pole to sort it out. We travelled past Croydon airport, which was then just a private airport I think. I loved to go ...see more

I was born in Davidson Road in 1942 and went to Davidson Road School. I remember we had blackboards and chalk to start with. We had music lessons and all learnt to play an instrument and also to read simple music (can't do that any more). There was a fire in the school while I was in the infants - can anyone remember it? I clearly remember one teacher rushing back in to get her bag after we had all been lined up in the ...see more

I sort of remember some of the names of the other pupils, Valerie Stebbing, Ann Stevens (we called her Moggy, don't know why!) Peter ...see more

I was born in Croydon in 1954 and lived in Addiscombe all my life. I went to Woodside School and also Ashburton Secondary Modern in Shirley Road. Both Addiscombe and Croydon have changed so much. I remember Kennards, C&A and Debenhams and when buses ran through Croydon town centre.

My parents operated a shop and a stall in Surrey Street from just after WW2 until my dad's untimely death in 1960. My mother kept the stall until 1962. They sold yard-goods and drapery fabric but during Summer when ladies were out of the house more and not sewing as much they sold ladies cotton shift-dresses and in December when people were busy with the holidays they sold Xmas items, slippers and chocolate-covered cherries ...see more
