Nostalgic memories of Croydon's local history

Share your own memories of Croydon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

This photo shows a view from the 'top' of Surrey Street market and my father was a trader there from just after WW2 until his untimely death in 1960. He operated a fabric (yard-goods and drapery) shop and during the good times had a stall outside too, then in leaner times just a stall. I saw Little Stevie Wonder at The Orchid when I was about 13 and he not much older, in the early 60s. Amazing young man in his red bolero type jacket and red trousers, playing his mouth organ. Also saw The Drifters there, great group, and still love their music. Is the place still there or is it something completely different these days? Mods were the rage then, the fellas in their parkers climbing on their Lambrettas, ...see more
I was around 13 and loved going there. They had a "spot prize" which I won twice, first, House of the Rising Sun and second, The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt. Both of them my father later gave away to the daughters of his friend. Was I mad when I found out!

My husband and I used to go dancing there in the 1960's when Frank and Peggy Spencer run dance classes. We met at the Maurice Jay school of Dancing in Norbury.
