For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

I was a Staff Nurse on this ward. We were in a prefabricated building, and had to push patients to theatre with a waterproof covering over them, to protect from the weather. Quite a lot of our patients came from a local home for thalidomide children. Darling resilient tots, who wizzed around on specially made walkers when they were recovering from what ever they were admitted with. I was very ...see more
I and my twin brother were born at Cuckfield Hospital in 1965. I went back there today for the first time in at least 30 years with my 13 year old son. It brought a tear to my eyes. The area seems very different from what I remember. Does anyone know when it stopped being a hospital and it was converted to flats and offices? Giles
I was born here in January 1956. I weighed in at 2lbs and measured just 10 inches and despite this I was a strong baby, no tubes for me, or so I'm told. My sister remembers playing on a sunken lawn outside the unit while my Mum visited me, the nurse would hold me up to the window for my sisters to see me, her name was "Auntie" Jean Brown. I was in hospital for about six months and my Mum continued to feed me, she would ...see more

In March 1976 I gave birth to my eldest son Richard. We were living in East Grinstead at the time. I met some lovely people during this time. One of the other mums I met there has to this day remained a friend. My memories of Cuckfield Hospital are of a lovely friendly village hospital not like the huge sterile hospital I gave birth to my other son. About 8 years ago I returned to Sussex and ...see more

My brother was born here in the late 50's, and I subsequently had an appartment here when it was converted into flats!
Just able to use this ipad as I am somewhat of a Luddite. Having googled the club I thought I would express my happy memories of the Sunday morning 25 mile time trials at Wiversfield and then off on the Sunday run from Cuckfield for 80 or more miles with pints and pie for lunch, a tea stop and back to the White Harte to finish with beer! I remember various charactors: Arthur and his sister, Cedric, John Gallsworthy, ...see more
In 1950 I lived with my parents in Church House - the partially obscured building on the right. Except for three years during the war I lived there from 1938 to 1958. I remember the spire of the church being struck by lightning (in 1944,I think) and it catching fire. At the far end of Church Platt was a small car park for the White Hart where I used to play endless games of football with my friends. I ...see more
I did not live in Cuckfield, but in Brighton. However, I did often visit and stay with my cousin, Eric Hardacre who in those early years lived in London Lane. He introduced me to mushrooming and looking for birds nests and rabbit warrens etc and a general appreciation and enjoyment of the surrounding countryside. Sadly Eric has died and I do miss him (he was 76 and I am now 79). I also remember one of his neighbours and friend Tim Peacock; I wonder where he is now?
