Share your own memories of Goldenhill and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

This photo was taken from the end of Shelford Rd (formerly Stewart Rd). I was born at No 14. My oldest brother always called the pub the Dog and Duck. I think it's a MacDonalds now (?). The main shop on the opposite side is the Co-op. I used to call in on my way home from Goldenhill RC school to collect groceries for my mum. At the other end of Shelford Rd was Sandyford Cricket Club. Many fond memories.
My grandad, George toye, used to play dominoes in that pub.
My twin brother Peter & me were born on High Street, Sandyford (No.226) in 1943. Our house was on the right whilst looking at this picture - about 8th up from the Pub. and directly across from the shops with the blinds showing. These were the Co-op. Separate shops as I remember, General Grocery on the left and a Butchers shop. Dad was in the Army and Mum was at home - she had worked at Radway Green R.O.F ...see more
Hello, I was just taking a look online at the churches etc in Goldenhill. My late father, James - Jim to many - was buried in St Johns graveyard way back in 1961, hence the interest. Much to my surprise, I saw a posting by my cousin Frank so sent him a little message. Memories of Goldenhill are mixed, my mother's family hailed from that area, my father was from Glasgow. Uncle George, my mother's ...see more
I was in Mrs Machins class at Goldenhill C of E school during this year and our class room was in the grave yard. We were asked one afternoon to do a fire drill and we would have to leave via a door in the back of the room leading to and through the graveyard. There had been rumours of Molly Leigh (Burslem witch) being buried there, and people walking through and getting their legs grabbed from beyond the ...see more
I just wondered if any one of the top end gang would remember my memories of playing football, I was born and bred in Alice Street in 1945. My mum and dad were Hannah and George Etheridge. I also had relatives that lived down Wilson Way by the name of Roberts. I also would like to know if any school friends are still around - Billy Yates, Wilf Simpking, Todger Heath, Joey Brough - I would like to hear from you all if possible.
Goldenhill (Happy days) My first memories of Goldenhill are visiting my grandparents during the terrible winter of 1947, the snow was said to be five feet thick on Oldcott Drive where it had drifted from across the fields. I also remember flying a kite my grandad had made, we flew it on starvation banks at the top of Kidsgrove bank, I think these were the waste tips from old coal mines which had been worked ...see more
As a child I was terrified of the churchyard, we had to walk past it to get to Wilson Way where my Nan Lizzie Grocott lived. It wasn't so bad in the summer but in winter when it got dark early we would get off the bus opposite the Church and it would loom up like a big dark monster as we crossed the road towards it. My sister and me would grip onto Mum's hand so tight we would get told off. The Church yard backed ...see more
Every year we would go to Pooles on the High Street to get yellow fishing nets so that we could go and collect tadpoles from ponds around the area. We would deliberate for a good while over what colour nets to get but we always ended up with yellow because our Dad said they showed the tadders up best. Tiko Bakery was at the top of Elgood Lane (Church Lane) behind the Swan and we used to walk past ever ...see more
