More about this scene
Hayling is linked to the mainland by a concrete road bridge that opened in 1956, replacing the wooden toll bridge. In the 1930s the toll was 8d for a car, quite expensive at a time when a craftsman earned 1s 2d per hour. In 1933 nine Hayling coastguard cottages plus a building plot were sold for £3,280, and in 1965 a 4-bedroom house with garden and garage in Hayling cost £10,500. Hayling's women's hockey club was formed in 1935. In 1938 the Regal cinema opened in Mengham Road, but it was demolished in the 1960s, and in its place is Mengham car park. In 1959 Hayling's population was 6,000; today it has tripled. The Hayling Billy train ran during the summer, and was packed with passengers, but the railway shut in 1964.
