Kingsley School

A Memory of Horley.

I went to Kingsley between 1956 and 1966 teachers I remember were ,Miss Edwards ,Miss Fowler , Miss Sparks , Miss Davies ,Miss Knight, MissStradling, Mrs Hayle, Miss Willett ,Miss Wise. Mrs Nicholson. I remember the house gardens (down the left hand side of the “ playground” where the climbing bars were)we all had to help in , that may have been a punishment for losing house points. I was in McKenzie I remember the house meetings which took place in the class room next to the senior common room ,upper 4th I think. Nikki the care takers dog ,the ducks he used to round up all the time. Guide meetings when we got milk and buns before we went to the guide hut. The pond the oak tree the pavillion ,sports day ,school songs . I think I am enjoying the memories more than the actual school days! Mrs Steel trying hard to get me to enjoy singing. Going swimming at the wagon shed outdoor pool ,one of my biggest hates!

I love your memories! I was there between 1966 and 1970, as a boarder for the last bit. I remember Mr. Adams dog Nikkie so well, and remember him rounding up the ducks. I remember the "house" gardens, the pond. The Oak Tree, which I loved. It is still there. The pond is gone though. I also remember going through the "cat flap" fire escapes through the dormitories on dares, and going out through the window and down the fire escape and running to the oak tree on a dare, and going to the swings. I remember tuck day, and waiting for the tuck cupboard to be unlocked and being allowed one piece of tuck, once a week after church. The head was Miss Stone. I remember Miss Bhagwagar, who instilled a love of India and I went there the minute I left school :) And Miss Davies who taught Nature. I can't remember the matrons name, or the deputy matron. She'd make us do embroidery and then make us unpick it if it was untidy. lol. I remember going to Brownies in the guides hut. Fried bread and marmalade:) mince and peas, losing house points for slouching. Hospital corners on the beds, losing dormitory points if they weren't crisp. I remember going up the ropes in the barn. And the climbing bars. Not being allowed down the main stairs, we had to use the old servants stairs by the kitchen. The ghost down at matrons end of the hallway. So many memories.
