More about this scene
Long before the advent of mass tourism, the coastline here had been exploited as a source of income for local people. During the 18th and 19th centuries many buildings (including the old railway station) were constructed with rock quarried from the beach. Much of the material was hauled to the water's edge for transportation by boat. Shipments of stone to Cardiff helped satisfy demand for paving stones in the rapidly expanding town.
