Lytham, Lowther Gardens c.1955

More about this scene
John Talbot Clifton's estate manager, Thomas Fair, drew up the original plans for Lowther Gardens. The previous estate manager had been his father James Fair, who had had the task of laying out the streets, making wider access roads and building cottages. Almost £300,000 was spent on this improvement. Tree planting depleted the Clifton coffers, and the family went abroad, but the beautifying of Lowther Gardens continued, as can be seen by the many flower beds and mature trees—a Mr Tomlinson took the work over. The 20th century brought objections from residents when further changes were mooted. Even the erection of a platform in the Gardens intended for the Rose Queen crownings was not wanted.
