More about this scene
Of all Windmill Land's windmills, the one in Lytham is arguably the most well known, but not the oldest—it dates from 1805. The 18th-century machinery inside is older than the structure, but like many of the tower mills it has a long history. The fire that raged in 1918 consumed all the woodwork (including an autographed panel signed by Sir Harry Lauder and Sir Martin Harvey); the wind suddenly changed direction, sending the sails in reverse, and sparks set off the fire. The Lifeboat House, very busy in 1924, is now being refurbished, and houses a museum telling the history of the lifeboats' activity on this stormy coast.
