To the north-east is the charming market town of Martock with its triangular market place. The Market Cross, in fact a fluted Doric column surmounted by a sundial, was erected in 1741, not long after the Market Hall. Both are in golden Ham stone; the Market Hall has a Venetian first-floor window above the pedimented doorway. Manor Place, to the right, still has its magnolia tree, and the West Somerset Stores behind the Market Hall is now an estate agents.

I have really good memories of Martock. During the Second World War, some time in the 1940s, I along with some other boys from Farningham Home For Little Boys was evacuated to Yeovil and Martock. We were taken to the Church Hall in Martock and sat in threes around some small tables. We sat there a bit forlorn thinking we would be split up.
