With no village centre to speak of, except where the Gothic/Tudor-style Hautboy Inn stands, Ockham is nevertheless a pleasant community of leafy lanes.
South-westwards from the North Wall (left), across the harbour basin just about as empty as it would be today, are the Cobb Warehouses (centre) and Granny's Teeth steps, to the left
The esplanade Hotel (left) stands on the north side of the Promenade; horse-drawn brakes wait for passengers from either the beach or the hotel, bound for the railway station in the town centre.
In 1993 this was replaced by the very successful design of the Castle Mall shopping centre, partly built underground below a raised park.
While a group of children on the beach greet the photographer, others visit the sweet shop (left), whilst a group wait with suitcases to be collected at the end of their holiday (centre).
Lane End is the crossroads in the centre of the picture.
This town was once a shipbuilding centre and the chief port of Merioneth, with a large trade in flannel and knitted stockings.
The centre around Tindal Square, dominated by the civilised Shire Hall built between 1789 and 1791, remains unspoiled.
The Saracens Head Hotel has gone the way of many smaller town centre hotels; it is now converted to shops and offices, including the bookshop Ottakar's.
The church is away from the present centre of the village and relates more to Latimer Park.
At the time when this picture was taken, horses and carts like that in the centre of the photograph were still a common sight outside the Bay Hotel, overlooking the sea front.
Its more salubrious site was, and remains, the one pictured here on Milford Hill, just east of the city centre beyond the ring road.
The site is now merely a car park for the somewhat less distinguished Regis Centre.
The wheeled cart in the centre of the picture bears the crest of the Royal Mail.
An ancient market town, Ormskirk was an important centre for the linen trade during the 16th century, whilst in the late 18th and early 19th centuries there were silk mills in the area.
The stream meanders through the centre of the village, and local children play pooh sticks and just watch the stream.
From here they penetrated far inland on destructive forays.
In the 18th century, Prestatyn was a centre for the lead-mining districts of north-east Wales.
It is an old centre with a 15th-century church, which has many fine treasures.
It is one of the oldest religious sites in the country, and was once the centre of pagan worship in the north of England, with a temple dedicated to the god Woden.
In the distance can be seen a small shopping centre with a post office at the point where Spring Lane branches off from Riverside.
An ice-cream tricycle stands outside Row End (centre).
The monument in the centre was modelled on the original Eleanor Cross, which was erected by King Edward I - he twice visited Birkenhead Priory.
Shipton Hill is prominent on the distant skyline (centre).
