Tannery Corner, in the Airedale village of Silsden, takes it name from the tannery of William Laycock and Son, seen in the right background of this picture.
This bridge over the River Aire linking Silsden and Steeton was built in 1806 at a cost of £3529; it opened up trade between Wharfedale and Airedale.
This is the ancient arched bridge over the River Aire in the pretty Airedale village of Malham.
Gateway to the Dales and the first town in Airedale, Skipton was a centre for sheep and cattle rearing; even its name is derived from Sheeptown.
In the valley below we can see the black chimney and imposing buildings of one of the many woollen mills which were such an important feature of Airedale.
The Buck Hotel, seen in the centre of the picture, is still a popular hostelry, while the Airedale Hotel on the left provided lunches and teas for the fast-expanding tourist market, in addition to accommodation
You would take your life in your hands if you tried to take this view looking south up the A650 Bradford-Skipton road in the centre of the Airedale town of Bingley today.
Major factories in this picture include the Honduras and the Airedale Works.
