Subsidence has been a constant problem in recent years for a number of buildings in Northwich - this has been the result of the underground mining of salt locally.
Northwich was noted for its chemical production - particularly salt. Now, most of its traffic travels by road, and this delightfully evocative scene is no more.
As the steam-powered barge 'Caledonia' leaves Hunts Lock heading towards Northwich, a pair of narrowboats churn up the water as they line up to enter the lock.
Consequently, salt from Nantwich and Middlewich attracted higher transport costs than that from Northwich.
Whenever the Chester Road and Northwich Road swing-bridges are opened to allow ships to pass along the Manchester Ship Canal, Warrington grinds to a halt; traffic tails back for hundreds of yards either
The River Weaver creates a link with the Trent & Mersey Canal by way of Northwich's mighty Anderton Boat Lift, where a pair of narrow boats could be lifted 50 feet in two caissons.
As well as for exporting salt, the Weaver was used to bring coal to Winsford, Northwich and Winnington.
Close to Northwich, Weaverham straddles an old Roman road, thus reminding us of the importance of the salt mines in this area nearly 2,000 years ago.
Now really a suburb of Northwich, Hartford has long been a more desirable area in which to live, particularly in the past for the town's wealthier manufacturers.
The Anderton Boat Lift at Northwich was built in 1875, providing a link between the Weaver Navigation and the Trent & Mersey Canal.
Along with Northwich and Nantwich, Middlewich is one of the three salt towns of Cheshire. It sits over the old Roman town of Salinae.
This style of boat was used not only on the Mersey but also along the River Weaver where they carried salt from Northwich.
The main waterway we see here is the Weaver Navigation, built so that the salt boats which floated down the River Weaver from Northwich and Nantwich could get back into those Cheshire towns without fighting
