We are on the Fair Oak Road, but here looking back towards Eastleigh. The No 43 bus (the front one) was a service between Bishop's Waltham and the airport via Bishopstoke and Eastleigh.
Both the buildings in this picture are part of Fair Oak Junior School. A new ultra-modern building has been constructed as the senior school, which for a time was known as a community school.
It is said that parts of it were used to make a seat now in Winchester Cathedral, and also a remarkable, intricate sculpture of the tree and its surroundings which is a feature in the front room of Fair Oak
Today the parish of Fair Oak incorporates Horton Heath, and its population is now over 8,000.
There are two mill streams, one known as the Barton River, from which water is provided for the Itchen Navigation Canal, and this branch, which follows the Fair Oak Road with Montague Terrace on the right
Its famous fair takes place in Old Field on the second Tuesday in September. The first recorded fair was a cattle fair held in 1850.
