My mother owned a dress shop in twickenham...and as I grew up I remember the swimming pool...which we broke into at night...about 1970...remember Pete Townsend wanting to rent our garage....and The Crown ballet school which was owned by the mother of Bonny Langford....as for Eel Pie island...unfortunately I was too young....but remember Barmey arms so well. The footbridge over to Eel Pie Island did not open until 9th February 1957, when folk were invited to a "Grand Gala Opening Night - A Three Band Session" at Eel Pie Island Jazz Club. They were treated to Cy Laurie, Bill Brunskill's Jazzmen and The Alpha Jazzmen Many thanks for the information - we will update our database to read c1960. Ed.
Re Mr Winkworths memory. I remember TURNCOCKS. The bike had a red frame as he says. Also I remember large white metal mudgards. The brakes were rod brakes rather than cable, however I could be wrong on this fact. The wheel rims were bright chrome and tyres may have been 26X 1 3/8. My family moved to COPTHALL GARDENS around 1955/6. I attended St James School (behind the police station) with my elder brother and younger sister. I have been back to see the school (the only known school with a playground on the roof) it is still there but is now an office block. We played on the river, around the river, in the river and sometimes came close to staying in the river. We had fun as only children can. As ...see more
