Wroughton From 1954ish

A Memory of Wroughton.

My parents moved from East London to Swindon and then to Wroughton in 1954. My parents were Pat and Geoff Leach. I am Janet (Leach - now Ford) and my sister penny was born in the maternity hospital in Swindon in 1958.

My Wroughton memories are living in Snapps Close (just off Priors Hill) and of walking to school and to Brownies, and Guides, down Priors Hill - in the dark sometimes. No cars to take us everywhere in those days. I have a fabulous photograph of the "Old Firm" which we think was 1930's. When we arrived at the junior school and once we were 9 and over, we had then to walk up Church Hill to the "top school" - now Legge House Youth Centre. Our teachers were Dennis Collins and Fred Cheshire.

Guiding was fun and the campsite at Elcombe a favourite place. We frequently say it was all "Darling Buds of May" stuff and it was.............................happy memories.

I have now married (2nd time" and live in Cheshire very near to my sister Penny. Mummy is still alive although like many of 96 now lives in a care Home - she has lost most of her mind but every now again comes out with a gemn.
