Bloody Londoners

A Memory of Yeovil.

My mum (Gloria Hawkins) was born in Yeovil in 1942 in an upstairs bedroom of 99 Westfield Grove. She left in 1960 to work at a holiday camp where she met my dad who was from London. They married and settled in West London where they went on to have 4 children.
During the school holidays my mum would pack me and my younger sister off to stay at my nan and grandads...
Loved every minute of those times, playing in the rec in Westfield Grove, walking up to Mudford Park with my Grandad on sunny evenings to watch the local athletes practice their running. The lovely 9 Springs and Ham Hill.
Coming from the city it was so nice to be in open fields and smelling fresh air.
We weren't always received well by the locals, as soon as some realised we were 'Townies' we were refered to as 'those bloody Londoners'... I remember one of my nans neighbours had a lump pulled out of her privet hedge and she blamed me and my sister. My nan, god bless her, put the woman right in her place...very funny to see my dear little old nan lose it.
I visited with my sister recently and saw how built up Yeovil has become and over crowded. :(
