For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

My dad was Lt Col Smith, commanding officer of Blenheim Barracks. We lived in Blenheim House (now demolished) in the late 1950s and as kids would watch the parades held every Tuesday on the ground at the top of Queens Avenue. Born in 1954 I lived in Graham Road, Wealdstone until I was 25. I started my school days at Whitefriars whilst waiting for a place at St Joseph’s and then ultimately Sacred Heart Grammar. My mum still lives in Denmead she is 100 years old,I recently stayed with her for few weeks due to my brother going into hospital .. The memories of my childhood came flooding back . Playing around the lanes and all of the walks we went on as children , the different shops there now all gone . Back in the 1950s my mum told our ex French Canadian police dog (a Husky/ Alsatian cross) to "sit" outside Farmers greengrocers (on the left in this photo) while she bought her vegetables but when she finished forget to tell him to "come" and several hours later had a phone call to say "your dog is still sitting here waiting for you" - did you forget him! His patience even made the local newspaper - complete with a photo!

Hi Anyone out there remember the Clifton Street School Annexe? I lived in Newburn Cres, not far away, in 1968-70, and went to school there. My Dad was a policeman and we lived in a police house next door to Jane Gresham who was friends with my sister. I found this site by chance as I have started to investigate my family history. My name is Andrew Porritt and whilst my Dad, Ron, lived in Greenhithe from birth in 1939 until moving to Gravesend in the 60s, his father was a Lewisham Porritt born in 1911 (George William who married Florence Johnson, from Gravesend, in the early 30s). I remember coming to Corby from South Wales and living in Landseer Court. My dad loved Corby, my mum not so much , we had nothing to what we had had in Wales, but it was getting dad out of the pit. We had a great market, and good shops, shame it has not advanced as it should have. I love the wooded areas and also the big black swan which as disappeared, shame, but there you go. The cinema down the old village every Sunday night, the Open Hearth and Dougie King, are my memories.
I remember al the names mentioned I was born in the house in fir grove We were the maxwells Wullie Margaret. Richard. And me John,and remember the hoggans well, biff was a character great with the kids , Wattie was a star,, the mckees move up to braeside place with us, I also remember Jeanie Breen and curly , they were right below us ,it was a great wee street.
We lived in Epping in the 60s and 70s best times of my life we lived in Nicholl road and went to school at Ivy Chimneys, great school and all the staff I can still remember nearly all my class mates where they lived all the little sweet shops scattered throughout my journey home.the town was beautiful my first job was at Maurice Irvines mens outfitters if there's anyone out there that lived in the town or went to the same school in the 60s would love to swap stories

I was at Compton in 1955 on the TPO course and again in 1956 on the Wireless course, loved the time I spent there and am still in touch with some of the Wraf friends I met there, they were good times.

I remember as a child moving into my parents 1st bought house it was 71 Lynn street west gorton heading onto redgate lane (which is still there today) and stoodley car auctions was built on this area and also there is a scrap yard which was there when I was a kid and still there now and I remember slack @ Cox also on redgate lane I have fond memories of playing on the croft on redgate lane near the longsight ...see more
I went to high view primary school around 1960 until age 11 and then attended lavender hill school during the 70s.
Any body who knew my brother please contact me . He was at Mount Pleasant School Sept 1956 to July 1957. He drowned on southbourne beach near the school while playing ball with fellow pupils Michael Gordon Patterson and Benjamin Foxley. Anybody who knew these boys )and my brother please contact me. My Mum Jessie Bull previously Johnson now aged 95 was I at the school certainly 85 years ago as she won a race for running and received a small cup of which she is still very proud of to this day. She has memories of a larger cup being kept in the school with her name on it. She also remembers the church across the road and the pub on the corner that she used to fetch her ...see more

I used the ferry to get to school in Southampton from 1961 to 1966.I well remember the shoals of Mullet which would gather at the stern of the Hotspur ferry when the boat was awaiting passengers. The river was so clear that the fish were a spectacle. I also remember the smells and sounds and warmth of the engine-room which the captain communicated with through a speaking tube. I have happy memories of playing on the steam traction engine that was in the playground next to fencepiece road. I am trying to find out whether the engine got scrapped or still exists. I lived at31middle lane from1957-1973, opposite Firkins green grocers and merediths sweetshop . I went to rokesley infants , crouch end juniors and seniors , later priory vale . Joined 66 cobs in park road also remember bike shop owned by .Cyril Ashwell , Karoma cafe(?)in park road . Also think there was a piano builders in either Linton road or the grove . I was born at 12 Ashwood Avenue on Peel Brow estate Ramsbottom in 1952. My father after being demobbed from the eighth army in 1945 had always and continued to work in cotton mills. I lived in Cockhill Lane in the tall flats from 1958 till 1972. Went to Colmers Farm nursery and school. I attended St Chad's church and went to the Brownie pack. I remember me and my friend Ruth coming out of Brownies going to the Elite Chip shop and getting batter bits then walking home through the gully next to the hairdressers.....up into Callowbrook and Deelands then to our block which was Rushmore House. I was fascinated to read the comments regarding Dr Lytle whom I met in the early 1980s when I was going out with his daughter Sarah. I was brought up in Thames Ditton, went to school at Kings College Wimbledon & had relatives in Esher. I grew up in Bedgebury rd in 1961 and attended Ealdham sq under the headmaster mf thee and the intrepid Mrs blyde music teacher,had really good schooling and then went to Eltham green which was a huge ,vast building with hundreds of children unlike Ealdham sq, great memories of playing run outs till dark till we got the dreaded call from your mum to come in, playing in derelict houses,playing with fireworks unheard of ...see more
My father purchased the Dowdings Estate Agency, I think possibly from the owner Mr William Dowding, in 1955. The original building, built circa 1900, was then sold to Lloyd's Bank when my father's business closed down in the mid 1980's. They originally rented just the ground floor and subsequently knocked the original building down and replaced it with the current building which they now occupy completely.

I lived in Wellis Avenue from1968 until 1979 and I think we we were the very last family to leave the flats in Ardwick Green before they wre demolished. I remember my boyhood years in Islip with affection. A favourite summer passtime was catching minnows in the Gallos Brook (affectionately known locally as the Weston Brook, purely because it came to Islip from Weston on the green). We'd be there for hours with our jam jars and a favourite spot was the bridge just outside the village which carried the Oddington road over the brook. It always seemed the most productive spot. As a young child during ww2 , my mother and me , living during the day in a caravan on the farm adjacent to the Bridgewater monument ,walked down the Back Hollow in the evenings , to sleep above the bakers in the village . My parents used to run this as a country hotel for 6 years in the 1950s, when I was growing up from the age of 10. There were 8 bedrooms - 6 in the new part, and 2 in the old part, plus 2 in the attic. I had one of the attic bedrooms, while there was a retired school teacher as a permanent resident in the other attic bedroom. My mother preferred people to book, so she could plan the food. I lived at 27 Kingsholm Gardens in Eltham from 1961. I have nothing but great memories of growing up in Eltham until we left around 1971. At 5 years old, running to Glovers or Wally's close to Brisset Park to pick up cigarettes for my mum at Mr Glovers (they sold them in fives and tens back then) or buying potatoes at Wally's. In the Leigh Surrey Website headed "History from Parishioners" is a photo of the Forge, Leigh taken around 1900. The people in the picture from right to left are; In the doorway Mr Frank Flint who later ran the Petrol station Mr George Flint the village blacksmith who was badly kicked by a shire horse and died of these injuries several months later on Christmas Eve 1909. I can remember when the redundancy was declared by the Blackburn Diocese and the worshipping community moved into the 'new' St John's School at the top of Turncroft..... with the assurance of a new church to be built a few yards up from the school site. My mother and father had garth stores in the early 1960 's. I still have good memories of these days, George and Christine Lewis, I am now 56 and living in Bournemouth.

This is Row 45, also known as St. John's Head Row after a public house on the south west corner. The pub still exists today. The row ran from North Quay to George Street. The photograph is shown looking towards George Street. The area suffered much damage from air raids in the 2nd world war.
My name is Brian Wilson, I was born in 1940 down Fen Drove now called Sykemouth Drove, Kirton Holme. Down this drove were farms, small holdings and houses 12 in total, today in 2016 only 4 remain. Whilst my memories are as a young boy I have some wonderful photos and a lot of information from my late mother and her sister. I joined the convent in 1967 and was the only black later joined by Leslie Philips from the Carribean. I am from Uganda and my dad was studying architecture at the AA. My grandparents (named Holder) owned the Delphine before it became a cafe. The told me in the very early days the only access was by horse & cart from Ringmore. I think that they made good use of the horse & cart to get to the Journeys End pub. They later owned one of the three garages shown in your photo. I recall holidays there in the late 40's and 50's. I grew up in Tower View and went to Benson and Selhurst in the 50s to 60s. My friends and I often went to Ashburton Park crossing the old golf course. Most of our memories come from activities at St Georges. We did several plays for the Millenial. I have fond memories of watching the railway wagons in the goods yard from Grangewood st Just behind the off licence in Plashet Grove. There was a crane with a huge magnet on the end that used to load the wagons with sheet metal off cuts. If you stood near the footbridge in Park rd nearby you would see a diesel train come out onto the main railway line, stop and reverse back in again, which always ...see more

Grandad was a Winder at Cortonwood Colliery. Lived at 53 Knollbeck Lane.Well known for his model railway in the garden. Variously known as Joe, Job and sometimes Alfred Job Wright. my grandfather henry eborall had a poulterers in the early 20th. century. his uncle had a builders business also, his name was Edward eborall. I am hoping that someone, somewhere may have photos of these places. eric eborall.
Would be interested to know if anyone remembered Knights toys that opened in Green Street in the early 80's. It was a double fronted shop on Tesco's side of the road and was something to do with Mark for toys in East Ham high street E6. It wasn't there for very long though. I remember going in there with my mum and noticing that there didn't seem to be enough toys to fill such a large shop.
I lived at 67a Crwys Crescent until 16 years old. Our prefab was directly opposite the farm gate and my brother, Peter Davies, and Diana Davies, spent many days playing in the stream. I remember others who also lived in the upper circle. Gloria Sims, Maureen Stag, Wendy Webb, Brian Israel, June Brassington, Richard Horn, Brinley Griffiths to mention a few. During the war I attended Sherwood Boarding School on Church Street and Downs Road. Behind the house was an abandoned and overgrown chalk quarry (The Pit) with an old cottage, our arts and crafts classrooms. The cottage is gone and it is now called "Elizabeth Welchman Gardens" On Saturdays we also went to the Odeón morning matiné. Does anyone remember the Harringtons who lived on Enid Street. After the deaths of their parents the newly married Esther Withers (the eldest daughter) and her husband Tom took on the five children orphaned and raised them with their own baby daughter. My dad, Chrissie was one of those children. You might remember him singing with his brother Timmy and playing baseball for "the buns". Sadly Chrissie passed away in 2013 but he was Splott and St Albans all his life. Debbie

I work in a care home in Fareham, with elderly people with Dementia. One lady who has become very special to me lived in Boarhunt for many many years.
Oh my, I love all those photographs...so many memories...The new school baffled me as I wasn't sure which one it was. I have a memory of visiting the Town Hall in the early 70s with my grandfather and being fascinated by a water feature in the foyer. It's no longer there and the staff don't seem to recall it at all. Have I imagined this or can anyone shed any light?
