Caption for Witley, The Village 1906: The artist Helen Allingham (1848-1926) lived for seven years during the 1880s at nearby Sandhills. A number of her sought-after country cottage pictures are of buildings in the Witley area. She painted the original cottages on this site just before they were pulled down amid much outcry in 1885, and replaced by these mock-Tudor buildings.

Memories of Witley

Does anyone have any memory of builders 'messrs F Milton & Sons Ltd who worked at the steam joinery works in Witley? I am trying to find if the company still exists.

Directly across the road from Woodersons grocery store was Mrs Stent's, the newsagents.. I was born in Sandhills, Witley in 1950. Witley is still a very picturesque village.

BUTCHERS SHOP, WITLEY. My mother and father ran the butchers shop in Wheeler Street, Doris and Mick McCullough, from 1936 to 1953. I remember the sweet shop next door (Fairfields) and the Co-op opposite (now Witley Wines). There was also Crossways Stores.
