Queues wait to board this floating bridge that had run since 1836. In 1977 it was replaced by the Itchen toll bridge. The Vickers Supermarine factory was nearby; here the Spitfire, designed by R J Mitchell, was built. The factory was destroyed by bombing in 1940, and under the new bridge is a memorial to R J Mitchell. Until the 1930s flying boats left here for the Channel Islands.
