Worcester, St Andrew's Spire c.1960

More about this scene
St Andrew's Church was demolished in 1947 but the medieval tower, with its elegant spire of 1751, was allowed to remain. It is known to Worcester folk as the Glover's Needle because of its slenderness and height, and because this part of town was the main gloving area when the trade still flourished. In 1801, while repairs to the spire were in progress, a barber shaved customers on top of it and a china painter decorated a cup. On another occasion a wine merchant shared a bottle of port up there with the editor of the 'Worcester Chronicle'.
