For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

One of my very first memories was of a family holiday spent at the HF Cliff House around 1961 - I would have been 4 years old and my brother Stephen maybe 18 months. I remember looking forward to the best bit of the day - our picnic lunch, (and, to this day, a famous HF institution!) on the beach. But oh ... the disappointment I felt when I accidentally dropped ...see more
I have been researching my family tree and remember my grandparents the 'Shipleys' lived in Glenside at the bottom of Church Street and right opposite the valley gardens. I played quite happily, the house looking through all the nooks and crannies. I remember being stung by a bee on the rockery which seemed to have a multitude of paths. I have now found out that my grandmother's side of the family 'Joseph ...see more
My memory of Marske is that of a summer holiday from Oaklands Home (mentioned on a previous page), I think it was on an army camp? on the clifftop. The sea was blinking freezing but the beach was lovely. We would walk along it to Saltburn in search of girls, well we were 11.HA. There was a funfair there and some shops; we all had a wonderful time. When the local people learnt we was from a home we got "treats". Happy days!!!
I lived with my family (Matthews) at 223 High Street from 1955 until 1963, brother David, sisters Cynthia and Jackie, parents Rene and Reg. I think my parents bought the house in 1952 as my brother was born in the back bedroom soon after. My sisters were already about 2 and 8 years old by then. We had an idyllic childhood. Very 'Enid Blyton', lots of outdoor adventures and lashings of lemonade! I remember ...see more
Hello Does anyone remember my lovely grandfather, Percy Plant, he lived in Dormanstown, a huge strapping fine man. He was the swimming instructor at Redcar Baths, he was also a tourist attraction on the pier and Redcar beach area, known also for his diving. I grew up in Dormanstown, in parts in the Wilton Avenue area, Clara Lady Dorman School, teacher, Mrs Tweedle. I ...see more
We came to Marske in August 1948 having just demobbed from the Army 9 weeks earlier, we purchased a shop at 221 High St selling groceries, rations, ice cream etc. Our daughter was just 5 weeks old and was baptized in St Germain Church, our son Peter went to school in the Old Tithe Barn, Mrs Buttery was the teacher. Mr Skippon ran the Pictures with 5 changes a week, each show had 2 features, a ...see more
The house on the left with the four attics was my Grandma's house.  I have lots of fond memories of this house. I even had my own bedroom! Mine was the second attic from the left and it enjoyed a beautiful view of the gardens below. Grandma used to run a bed and breakfast, with also some long term boarders. I can remember helping to get the breakfast ready and putting it in the dumb waiter and ...see more
I stayed here with my mother and sisters when I was 5 and later when I was 11. Then it was owned by the Holiday Fellowship (now HF Holidays) who ran walking holidays for families. I have very fond memories of the house and the area. It was a magical place for a young child - very exciting to be in a big house right by the beach. It even had a games room with a ping pong table (yes it was a simpler time!) Every day ...see more
